Chapter Thirteen

TIAGO

I fell even more in love with Ferris when he made a cheesy bacon ranch chicken with alfredo pasta for dinner. It was decadent and delicious, so I didn’t feel like moving after we finished. “That was amazing, but I think you put me in a food coma,” I said with a laugh as we sat in his living room.

He flashed a roguish grin. “That’s because I wanted to talk for a bit before we got distracted.”

“Aren’t you a clever cookie?”

His expression turned rueful. “Actually, I’m embarrassingly slow on the uptake.”

I gestured for him to speak. “I’m all ears.”

He took my hand in his, interlacing our fingers before he began. “In the entirety of our friendship, I’ve never had to wonder how you feel about me.”

“Yeah, I haven’t exactly been subtle.”

Ferris snorted in amusement. “That’s an understatement if I’ve ever heard one.” He refocused himself. “You know me so well; I rarely have to say things for you to understand them. You just get me.”

“I’d like to think I’ve mastered the fine art of hearing what you don’t say.” I brushed my thumb over the back of his hand that held mine.

My comment made him frown. “And that’s the issue. You’re too good at reading me.”

“Ironically, I’m failing to see why this is a problem for you right now.” I grinned at him so he’d understand I was teasing him. “Care to clue me in?”

Instead of answering, he asked a surprising question of his own. “Do you think I love you?”

I clamped down on my instinct to give him a smart-ass answer. “No, I know you love me. You have for a long time, even though you were in denial about it for a while.”

“But I’ve never said those words to you.” His blue eyes begged me for answers. “How do you know?”

“Because I can feel it. When we’re together, it overflows from your heart with passion.” I kissed the back of his hand to reassure him. “While it would be nice to hear, I don’t need you to tell me to know it’s true.”

Ferris moved to straddle my lap as he looked deep into my eyes. “I don’t want you to have to read between the lines about something this important. I love you, Tiago. I’m sorry I’ve never said it out loud before. I don’t even know why I didn’t say it back to you. But it made me sick to my stomach earlier today to realize that because I hadn’t put my feelings into words, you might think I was only with you to satisfy my lust or curiosity. I need you to understand I’m in love with you, too.”

My heart swelled with affection for my boyfriend. I looped my arms around his waist as I held him closer. “Then that makes me the luckiest man in the world.” I guided him down for a chaste kiss. “I love you, too.”

“Our friendship and being loved by you are the best things that have ever happened to me.
